Search a question on Google today and there’s a good chance the first thing you see isn’t a list of links. It’s an AI-generated summary at the top of the page, with a few sources linked beside it. That’s Google’s AI Overview.
For businesses, this changes the game in two ways. First, fewer people scroll down to the classic results for informational questions. Second, the handful of sources linked in the overview get very prominent visibility, often above the number one organic result.
Perplexity works in a similar way, except the whole experience is an AI answer with numbered citations. Both reward the same thing: being the clearest, most trustworthy source on a question.
In this guide I’ll explain how AI Overviews and Perplexity pick their sources, and the practical steps we use to help our clients get cited.
What are Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results. They’re built with Google’s Gemini models on top of Google Search, which means they draw on pages that Google has already crawled, indexed and considers relevant and trustworthy.
A few characteristics matter for SEO:
- They appear mostly for informational and comparison queries, and less often for simple navigational searches.
- They usually link to several sources, and those sources are not always the top-ranking pages.
- The content of the overview can change from day to day as Google refines it.
Google has been expanding AI Overviews to more countries and languages, so it’s worth checking how they appear for your most important queries in both English and Arabic.
How Perplexity chooses sources
Perplexity is an AI answer engine. For each question it searches the web, reads a set of pages and writes an answer with numbered citations. Users can click through to the sources, ask follow-up questions or compare options.
Perplexity tends to favor pages that answer the question directly, are easy to parse, come from sources that look credible, and are recent when the topic is time-sensitive. In other words, the same qualities that help with AI Overviews.
Why AI Overviews matter for your business
- Visibility at the top of the page. Being cited in an overview can put your brand above the traditional results.
- Trust by association. Users see your brand chosen as a source by Google’s AI, which builds credibility.
- Better-qualified clicks. People who click a source from an overview often want deeper information, a comparison or a provider, which tends to mean higher intent.
- Defensive value. If you’re not cited, a competitor or a directory might be, and they’ll shape how users understand your category.
Step 1: Earn a place in the organic results
Because AI Overviews are built on Google Search, the most reliable way to be cited is to already be a strong candidate in the organic results for that query and closely related ones. Pages outside the top results can be cited too, but rarely if they’re not indexed, relevant and trusted.
Start with the fundamentals: crawlable pages, fast load times, clear topical focus and relevant authority. If you need help with that foundation, our SEO services cover it end to end.
Step 2: Match the questions behind the query
AI Overviews often answer several related questions at once. For “ecommerce website cost in Saudi Arabia,” the overview might cover price ranges, what affects cost, platform options and timelines.
Map those related questions for your key topics. Look at “People also ask,” at the overview itself and at the follow-up questions Perplexity suggests. Then make sure your page answers each of them clearly.
Step 3: Structure content so it’s easy to cite
- Lead with the answer. Put a clear, one-to-two sentence answer right under each question-style heading.
- Keep one idea per section. Focused sections are easier for AI systems to extract.
- Use lists, steps and tables for processes and comparisons.
- Define terms precisely. Short, accurate definitions get quoted often.
- Add FAQ sections for common follow-up questions, with genuinely useful answers.

Step 4: Show real expertise and experience
AI Overviews and Perplexity both lean toward sources that demonstrate credibility. Make yours obvious:
- Add clear author bylines with relevant experience.
- Share first-hand examples, process details and lessons from real projects.
- Cite reliable sources when you reference data or standards.
- Keep an up-to-date About page that explains who you are and why you’re qualified.
Generic content that could have been written by anyone rarely stands out. Specific, experience-based content does.
Step 5: Use structured data where it fits
Structured data doesn’t guarantee inclusion, but it helps search engines understand your content and your business. Useful types include Organization, LocalBusiness, Article, Product, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList. Use only markup that accurately reflects what’s visible on the page.
Step 6: Keep content fresh and accurate
For topics where things change, such as prices, platform features or regulations, outdated information is a common reason pages get skipped. Update key pages regularly and make the update date visible when it matters to the reader.
Step 7: Don’t block the crawlers you want
Check that Googlebot can access and render your important pages. For Perplexity, allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt and in any bot-protection or firewall settings if you want your pages to be eligible as sources. Security tools sometimes block these crawlers by default without anyone noticing.
Step 8: Track your visibility
- Monitor target queries manually or with a rank tracker that records AI Overview appearances and cited sources.
- Check Search Console for changes in impressions and click-through rate on informational queries.
- Watch referral traffic from perplexity.ai and other AI tools in Google Analytics 4.
- Record which competitors are cited, then study what their pages do differently.
Can you opt out of AI Overviews?
You can limit how much of your content Google shows in snippets using controls like nosnippet or max-snippet, and these also affect AI Overviews. But opting out usually means giving up visibility to competitors. For most businesses, the better strategy is to earn citations with content that makes people want to click for more.
A quick checklist
- The page ranks, or is close to ranking, for the query and related ones.
- Each key question is answered clearly in the first sentences of its section.
- Comparisons and steps use tables and lists.
- The author and the business behind the content are clearly credible.
- Structured data is accurate and matches visible content.
- Key information is up to date.
- Googlebot and PerplexityBot can access the page.
