Generative Engine Optimization Strategies and Tools That Actually Work

Most GEO advice online falls into two camps. One says “just do good SEO and AI will figure it out.” The other sells secret tricks for “hacking” ChatGPT. Neither matches what we see in real projects.

What works is a structured approach: strengthen the foundations AI systems rely on, make your brand easy to understand and cite, build credible mentions, and measure what changes. In this guide I’ll share the nine strategies we use with clients across Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and the tools that help us track results.

If you’re new to the topic, start with our explanation of AEO vs SEO vs GEO, then come back here.

Strategy 1: Start with an AI visibility baseline

You can’t improve what you haven’t measured. Before changing anything, build a prompt list of 20 to 50 questions your customers might ask AI tools. Mix a few types:

  • Category prompts: “best SEO agency in Riyadh,” “top e-commerce platforms in Saudi Arabia.”
  • Problem prompts: “how to increase online store sales in the UAE.”
  • Comparison prompts: “Salla vs Shopify,” “agency vs freelancer for SEO.”
  • Brand prompts: “What does [your brand] do?” “Is [your brand] reliable?”

Run them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google (to check AI Overviews). Record whether you’re mentioned, how you’re described, which competitors appear and which sources are cited. That’s your baseline.

Strategy 2: Strengthen the SEO foundation

AI answer engines lean heavily on search results. If your key pages aren’t indexed, fast and relevant, they’re unlikely to be retrieved as sources. Fix technical issues, consolidate thin or duplicate pages, and make sure your most important topics each have a strong, dedicated page.

This is the least glamorous strategy and usually the one with the biggest impact.

Strategy 3: Define your brand entity clearly

AI systems think in entities: companies, people, products, places and the relationships between them. Help them by stating the essentials clearly and consistently:

  • A one-sentence description of what you do and for whom.
  • Your core services or product categories.
  • The markets and cities you serve.
  • Your founders or key experts and their expertise.

Put this on your About page and homepage, mirror it on LinkedIn, your Google Business Profile and major directories, and support it with Organization structured data. For bilingual Gulf businesses, make sure the Arabic and English descriptions say the same thing.

Strategy 4: Create citable, answer-first content

Generative engines prefer content they can quote accurately. For each important topic:

  • Answer the core question in the first sentences.
  • Use clear, question-style headings.
  • Add specifics: numbers, ranges, timelines, criteria and examples.
  • Use tables for comparisons and numbered lists for processes.
  • Close with an FAQ that covers natural follow-up questions.

Practical guides for this are in our articles on how to rank in ChatGPT and AI Overviews SEO.

Strategy 5: Publish original insights

AI systems summarize what’s already on the web. When everyone says the same thing, there’s little reason to cite you specifically. Original material changes that:

  • Findings from your own projects, anonymized where needed.
  • Short surveys of customers in your market.
  • Benchmarks, pricing guides or checklists based on real experience.
  • Clear opinions from recognized experts on your team.

Original insights are more likely to be referenced by other websites too, which strengthens your authority in both search and AI answers.

Strategy 6: Build trusted third-party mentions

When AI tools recommend companies, they often rely on what others say: comparison articles, “best of” lists, reviews, news coverage and community discussions. Focus on:

  • Digital PR in reputable regional and industry publications.
  • Relevant directories and roundups where buyers in your category actually look.
  • Genuine customer reviews on Google and industry platforms.
  • Partnerships that lead to natural mentions on partner websites.
  • Expert contributions such as interviews, podcasts and guest articles.

Well-planned link building and digital PR support rankings and AI visibility together, so this effort pays off twice.

Strategy 7: Optimize for AI crawlers and rendering

  • Allow the AI crawlers you want in robots.txt, for example OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot (OpenAI), PerplexityBot and Googlebot.
  • Check that bot protection or firewall rules aren’t blocking them unintentionally.
  • Make sure important content is present in the HTML, not only loaded by JavaScript after interaction.
  • Keep pages fast and error-free, and maintain a clean XML sitemap.

Strategy 8: Keep information fresh and consistent

AI tools can repeat outdated details, like old prices, closed branches or discontinued services. Schedule quarterly reviews of your key pages and profiles. Update facts in one go across your website and external profiles so the information stays consistent everywhere.

Strategy 9: Measure, learn and iterate

Re-run your prompt list monthly and compare it with the baseline. Track:

  • Share of voice: how often you’re mentioned compared with competitors.
  • Citations: which of your pages are cited and for which prompts.
  • Accuracy: whether AI tools describe your business correctly.
  • AI referral traffic in Google Analytics 4, from sources like chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com.
  • Branded search in Google Search Console.

Use what you learn to decide what to create, update or promote next.

Generative engine optimization tools

The GEO tool market is young and changing fast, so treat these as categories to explore rather than a fixed list:

NeedTool optionsWhat they help with
AI visibility trackingSemrush AI toolkit, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Profound, Peec AI, Otterly.aiTracking brand mentions, citations and share of voice across AI assistants
Search foundationGoogle Search Console, Ahrefs, SemrushIndexing, rankings, queries and technical issues
Traffic and conversionsGoogle Analytics 4Measuring referral traffic and conversions from AI tools
Technical checksScreaming Frog, PageSpeed InsightsCrawlability, rendering and performance
Structured dataSchema Markup Validator, Rich Results TestValidating Organization, Article, FAQ and other markup
Manual testingChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, GoogleRunning your prompt list and recording results

You don’t need all of them. A realistic starting stack for most businesses is Search Console, GA4, one rank tracker and a simple spreadsheet for monthly prompt tracking. Add a dedicated AI visibility tool once GEO becomes a significant channel for you.

How to prioritize if you’re just starting

  1. Build your prompt list and baseline (Strategy 1).
  2. Fix the SEO foundation on your most important pages (Strategy 2).
  3. Clarify your entity and align your profiles (Strategy 3).
  4. Upgrade your top pages to answer-first content (Strategy 4).
  5. Start a steady program of mentions and original insights (Strategies 5 and 6).
  6. Review monthly and adjust (Strategy 9).

This order front-loads the work that improves both Google rankings and AI visibility, so you see business value early while longer-term authority builds.

If you’d rather have a team handle this, our generative engine optimization services cover the full process, from baseline to monthly reporting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most important GEO strategy?

For most businesses, a strong SEO foundation combined with clear, answer-first content on key pages delivers the biggest early impact, because AI answer engines rely heavily on search results and citable content.

Do I need special tools for generative engine optimization?

Not at the start. Search Console, Google Analytics 4 and a monthly prompt-tracking spreadsheet are enough to begin. Dedicated AI visibility tools become useful as GEO grows into a meaningful channel.

How long do GEO strategies take to show results?

Technical and content improvements can influence AI answers within a few months, while authority built through mentions and original insights compounds over a longer period.

Is GEO only relevant for large brands?

No. Smaller businesses can often win specific, niche and local prompts faster than large brands, especially with clear expertise and consistent information.

How is success measured in GEO?

Track how often your brand is mentioned and cited for your target prompts, how accurately it’s described, AI referral traffic and branded search growth over time.
