AEO vs SEO vs GEO: What’s the Difference and Which One Does Your Business Need?

Every few months a new acronym lands in my inbox. A client in Riyadh asks whether they should “stop doing SEO and start doing GEO.” A store owner in Dubai forwards an agency proposal for “AEO packages” and wants to know if it’s real. Last week someone asked me about “LLMO.”

The short answer I give all of them is the same: these are not three separate strategies you have to choose between. They are three layers of the same goal, which is to be the source people find, trust and choose, wherever they search.

The longer answer is what this guide is about. I’ll explain what SEO, AEO and GEO actually mean, where they overlap, where they genuinely differ, and how I’d prioritize them if I were running a business in Saudi Arabia or the UAE today.

If you only remember one thing: SEO gets you ranked, AEO gets you quoted, GEO gets you recommended. And the foundation for all three is the same, which is clear, trustworthy content on a technically healthy website.

What is SEO?

Search engine optimization is the practice of making your website easy for search engines to crawl, understand and rank for the searches your customers make. It has three familiar pillars:

  • Technical SEO: crawlability, indexing, site speed, mobile experience and structured data.
  • On-page SEO: content that matches search intent, clear headings, internal links and helpful page experiences.
  • Off-page SEO: authority signals, mainly relevant backlinks, brand mentions and reviews.

SEO is still where most commercial intent lives. When someone in Jeddah searches “ecommerce website design” or someone in Abu Dhabi searches “dental clinic near me,” they are usually ready to act. If you’re not visible there, you’re leaving revenue on the table, no matter how good your AI strategy is. That’s why our SEO services start with these fundamentals before anything else.

What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?

Answer engine optimization is about structuring your content so that search engines and assistants can lift a direct answer from it. It became important with featured snippets, “People also ask” boxes and voice assistants like Siri and Google Assistant.

AEO focuses on:

  • Identifying the exact questions your audience asks.
  • Answering each question clearly in the first one or two sentences, then expanding.
  • Using formats that are easy to extract: short definitions, numbered steps, comparison tables and FAQs.
  • Adding structured data such as FAQ and HowTo schema where it genuinely fits.

A good way to think about AEO: it’s SEO written for someone who wants the answer immediately. It’s not a different discipline, it’s a sharper way of writing and formatting the content you should already have.

What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?

Generative engine optimization is the newest layer. It’s about increasing the chances that AI systems like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity mention, cite or recommend your brand when they generate an answer.

The key difference is that a generative engine doesn’t just show a list of links. It reads many sources, summarizes them and produces its own answer. Sometimes it cites the sources it used, sometimes it just mentions brand names, and sometimes it recommends specific companies or products.

To be part of that answer, a few things matter a lot:

  • Clear entities. The AI needs to understand who you are, what you do, where you operate and what you’re known for. Inconsistent descriptions across your site, social profiles and directories make that harder.
  • Citable content. Specific, well-structured facts, definitions, data and expert opinions are easier to quote than vague marketing copy.
  • Corroboration. AI systems give more weight to information that appears consistently across trusted sources: reviews, industry publications, partner sites and credible directories.
  • Freshness and accuracy. Outdated pricing, services or locations can get repeated back to users, which hurts trust.

This is exactly what we work on in our generative engine optimization services: making sure AI systems understand your business correctly and have good reasons to recommend it.

What about LLM SEO and LLMO?

You’ll also see the terms LLM SEO and LLMO (large language model optimization). In practice, they describe the same idea as GEO: optimizing your presence so large language models understand and surface your brand. Different agencies prefer different labels, but the work is the same. Don’t let the naming confuse you or push you into paying for three separate services that overlap almost completely.

Where SEO, AEO and GEO overlap

This is the part most articles skip, and it’s the most important. The overlap between the three is huge:

  1. Helpful, expert content is the core of all three. Search engines rank it, answer engines extract it, and generative engines cite it.
  2. Technical health matters everywhere. If a page can’t be crawled or loads poorly, it won’t rank, won’t be featured and is less likely to be used as a source.
  3. Authority and trust carry across. Backlinks, reviews and mentions from credible sources help rankings, and they also help AI systems decide which brands are trustworthy.
  4. Clear structure helps everyone. Descriptive headings, short answers and tables serve human readers, featured snippets and AI summaries at the same time.

Many AI answers are also grounded in live search results. Google’s AI Overviews are built on top of Google Search, and ChatGPT’s search and Perplexity pull from web results too. In other words, strong SEO is often the entry ticket to AI visibility, not a competitor to it.

Where they genuinely differ

The overlap is big, but the differences are real and they change how you plan your work.

The goal is different

SEO optimizes for a click to your website. AEO optimizes for being the answer, even if the user doesn’t click. GEO optimizes for being mentioned or recommended inside a conversation, which might happen long before the user ever visits your site.

The unit of optimization is different

In SEO we usually think in pages and keywords. In AEO we think in questions. In GEO we think in entities and claims: what is true about your brand, and where on the web is that confirmed?

The signals are weighted differently

For GEO, off-site presence matters more than many people expect. Being mentioned in a respected industry roundup, a local news story or a well-known comparison article can influence AI answers even without a traditional backlink.

Measurement is different

SEO has mature tools: rankings, Search Console, analytics. GEO measurement is still young. Today it usually means tracking which prompts mention your brand, monitoring referral traffic from AI tools in analytics, and watching branded search trends. It’s less precise, so you need to be comfortable with directional data.

How I’d prioritize them for a business in the Gulf

Here is the order I recommend to most clients, from e-commerce stores to service companies:

  1. Fix the SEO foundation first. Make sure your key pages are indexed, fast, mobile-friendly and targeting the right searches in both Arabic and English where relevant. Without this, everything else is built on sand.
  2. Rewrite key content in an answer-first format. Take your top service pages, product categories and FAQs, and make sure each important question is answered clearly and early. This is AEO, and it usually improves conversions too.
  3. Clean up your entity footprint. Make your company name, services, locations and descriptions consistent across your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and marketplaces. In the Gulf, where many businesses operate under both an Arabic and an English name, this step is often overlooked.
  4. Build trusted mentions. Earn coverage and references in credible regional and industry sources. This supports SEO authority and gives AI systems more reasons to trust you.
  5. Start measuring AI visibility. Test the prompts your customers would use, note which competitors appear, and track AI referral traffic monthly.

If you’re a newer business, steps one and two will deliver most of the early value. If you’re an established brand, steps three and four are often where the biggest untapped opportunity is.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Abandoning SEO for GEO. AI answers still depend heavily on search results and on the web’s existing authority signals.
  • Writing for machines instead of people. Stuffing pages with questions or robotic definitions doesn’t work. Clear, genuinely useful content wins in every channel.
  • Chasing every new acronym. AEO, GEO, LLMO and AI SEO overlap heavily. Focus on the underlying work, not the label.
  • Ignoring Arabic and English consistency. If your English and Arabic pages describe your services differently, AI systems may merge or confuse the information.
  • Expecting instant results. Like SEO, AI visibility builds over time as your content and reputation accumulate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Generative engines rely heavily on search results and on the same trust signals that power SEO. GEO extends SEO into AI-generated answers; it doesn’t replace it.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO focuses on being the direct answer in search features like featured snippets and voice assistants. GEO focuses on being cited, mentioned or recommended inside AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.

Are LLM SEO and LLMO the same as GEO?

In practice, yes. LLM SEO, LLMO and AI SEO are different names for optimizing your brand’s visibility in large language models and AI answer engines.

Which should a small business focus on first?

Start with the SEO foundation and answer-first content on your most important pages. Those two steps improve your rankings, your chances of being featured and your chances of being cited by AI tools at the same time.

How do I measure GEO results?

Track which of your target prompts mention or cite your brand, monitor referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics, and watch branded search trends over time. Measurement is still developing, so focus on consistent, directional tracking.
